IME, the first males will start coloring at 2" or so. This is also a hap where the male is rarely in full breeding dress (solid blue body and spots aren't visible). The blue typically starts first in the head and fins and works towards the body.
The blaze also starts at the nose/snout and tail about the same time the color change happens. However, the blaze really isn't into full glory until a year or two in.
