So I'm a college student and I have limited resources, so I found a 40 US gallon kit tank for an affordable price. I would like to make it a cichlid tank, but I realize I would be greatly restricted due to size. I was wondering if you guys could help me out with a stocking list and numbers that would fit in a 40 gal tank. The following fish are ones I REALLY like, so if you could, try to base your setups off this list or fish that look similar. Thanks.

Cynotilapia afra
Labidochromis caeruleus
Pseudotropheus saulosi
Pseudotropheus sp. "Acei"
Metriaclima estherae

I don't know how many I could have, if any. So any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What are the dimensions of your tank?

If it's 36" i wouldn't consider the Acei or Estherea. The size of the tank isn't suitable for these fishes needs, as they grow quite large and need more swimming room.

5 Afra, 5 Labs would be fine (Afra 1m/4f)

Or 10-12 Ps. Saulosi (species only 2m/8f). I wouldn't mix these fish with most afra or labs.

What Afra species is available to you?

You might get away with adding 3 acei to either group i suggested. Your filtration will have to be good.
Thats your call there, if you get them, get them small and if they outgrow your tank trade them in.
As for the Zebra, noooooooo!

Good luck :)
