how long should i run a new filter on an existing tank to get it to have acceptable bacterial growth? bought a AC 50 gallon and am going to put it on a 29 gallon but figured it would be faster to put it on my existing tank than to cycle the 29 from scratch.

Best thing to do is mix some of the media from an existing filter with the media in your new filter (make sure you clean the new filter out first). Then you could either run it for a few days on your old tank or go straight to the new one. It should come up to speed relatively quickly, but as always you need to test the water regularly.
