Sorry i just had to write and say that my Yellow Labs had babys
i was so shocked to see them. there was 3 of them about 1/2 inch long in the overflow box.

i never noticed she was holding or that i had a female. i went and got a net nursery and put them in it.

if there was others more than likely they got eaten or sent down into the sump. i might have to take a good look in it tomorrow to see if there is any there.

what is the average number of fry per "litter" ?

Congrats :thumb: I've got 2-3 fry in my tank too but not even sure what they are since I didn't notice any fish holding either. Maybe when they first start holding they don't hold so many and it's not as noticable?

Number of fry depends on the size and experience of the female.

Do you have the breeder net in the main tank? If so, don't leave them in that. The adults get really good about sucking babies through the net. If your going to grow the fry out go pick up a 10 gal "starter kit" (make sure it has a heater) and set that up for your fry.

they are leaving them alone in the net. and i dont see how they could get sucked through it. they are about 1/2 long and fast..

if they were a day or 2 old i would understand but the net is so fine i dont see them getting hurt
but thanks for the words of advise if and when my convicts get a healthly batch i will move them

I have witnessed 3/4 inch fry getting sucked through the mesh (kind of like a meat grinder on the otherside). The adults will wait until the fry rest on the bottom or in one of the corners at night. I find that labs are the best at eatting fry in nets.

A meat grainder is what I was gonna compare the sucking through to also. The fry are very delicate when young. They can get stuck in the bottom corners of fry nets between the net and plastic frame. I have also had Aulonocara chew at stuck fry trying to eat them and killing them in the process.
