I believe I have 2 male Melanocromis auratus that periodically chase each other head to tail in a very tight circle. Any idea why they are doing this?

Aggression. Two male auratus in the same tank is usually a problem. They are the iconic aggressive mbuna.
Both of these fish had the female coloration when they were yunger!
All juvenile auratus have the female coloration...really the juvenile coloration. Females stay the same and males change to breeding dress when mature.

They are fighting. That's the way Mbunas fight for dominance.
