Okay so I have a list that I would like to bounce off you folks. Many of the online fish dealers have a 4 fish colony where you will get a guaranteed male and they will try their hardest to get 3 females. My tank is a 55 gallon with a FX4 filter. I like the overstocked look and I used the Cichlid Profiles here in the Library to find no highly aggressive and I looked for more colorful females. I know this is a 4 species list but here we go.

Pseudotropheus Saulosi
Cynotilapia sp. Hara
Iodotropheus Sprengerae "Rusty" (I really prefer a Yellow Tail Acei even if I see them as they pass 5")
Pseudotropheus cyaneorhabdos "Maingano"

I have never had luck with quads. PM me if you want a vendor recommendation.

I would not exceed 3 species in a 55G. I would avoid maingano in a 55G as people have had trouble with them...they seem to be better in a 75G footprint and stocked as 1m:7f. I would choose one blue barred fish...I have tried hara with other blue barred fish and they did not color well. As soon as I moved them to a tank with say yellow labs or a species tank, they lit right up.
