I've seen overfed fish that are abnormally large but a 12 inch Aulonocara, particularly a variety as small as an Aulonocara baenschi, is hard to believe. I would have to see a picture of the fish with something else to relate the size to.

If this fish is an Aulonocara, I wouldn't pay a penny for it, as it's likely been given growth hormones or been horribly overfed. Either scenario means a very unhealthy fish with a short lifespan.

How are you measuring?

I don't use the tail in measurments. Mine is the biggest I've ever seen at 7".. that doesn't include the tail. I have a Venustus people swear is 10"+ but he's 8".

I'm not trying to doubt you, but either he's mixed with something else, or he's very very old.
Honestly, I concider the one I have to be very old.

Even if he's 8", I'd hesitate to buy him as he may only have a year or 2 left before he starts to fade due to age.

I also want to note, don't go by what the retailers say the size is as an estimate. I once traded in a 3" tropheus to a local shop. On the phone, he wasn't too excited, but when the manager saw it, he said the suppliers would have considered that fish a 4.5-5" fish. I don't know how the wholesalers get these numbers.

Sorry if I, or others popped your bubble.. sounds like an awesome fish and I wish I could see him. I'm sure he was breathtaking.

Most of the smaller haps/peacocks listed in the profiles of this site get much lager than the advertised sizes. I I have 6" fish that the profiles tell me won't get more than 4"... and they're still growing, but they only grow so much. 10" could be accounted for in total lenth.
I believe the benga is listed at 5" in the profiles but mine is just shy of 7".. and is probably 8.5-9" in total length.
