Male? Female? Hormoned?

I bought this guy 3 or 4 months back from the LFS and at the time it was alot smaller and had brighter red on him. *** noticed it hasnt grown as much as the rest of the fish I bought at the same time. Also the color has faded from red to reddish brown. Its also developed some black spots on its sides. Im starting to think this might have been a hormoned female. Tell me what you think.
