Not only would a lone fish be unhappy, you'd grow very bored of the fish in a short time. Part of the charm of African cichlids, is their interaction with one another, which is why they're always better to watch in groups, whether it's spawning activity or territorial disputes. Honestly, a lone African cichlid doesn't really have much personality. A better option for a wet pet would be a larger Central American cichlid like a Midas or Red Devil. These fish are often very interactive with their keepers and can be entertaining to watch on their own.

A 90 gallon would be an excellent tank for a mbuna tank with varying species. When set up properly, it can be extremely colourful, active and entertaining.
