G'day jboyd,

What type of community tank are you after?

Cichlid only, with a range of compatible single specimens.
There are a few stocking variables here. Size of the cichlids, temperament and aggression levels of different species, whether you have "pairs" or multiples of one species.
Basically do you want big and "can handle themselves" or a few species that will get along without to many dramas.

Community tank. Where you have pairs, trios, or multiples of 2 or 3 smaller species, along with tetras, corydoras and smaller catfish. Basically peacefull, interactive community tank.

Have you visited any/many LFS in your area to see what they have in range and spoken to them to see what else they can get in for you?

Also what about aquascaping?

Are you interested in having plants and driftwood in the tank, or just driftwood. Plants don't have to make it difficult to keep. Unless you want to go out there with a underwater garden.
