Haplochromis "Labrochromis" ishmaeli is a mollusk eater, a pharyngeal crusher. It has a rounded head with a powerful jaws used to crush the snails. It is often confused with H. sp. "Thick Skin", but these differ with regards to diet, head shape, and the amount and intensity of the yellow color on the body.

You will note that we have indicated the genus Labrochromis as a subgenus in quotation marks until a re-evaluation of Humphrey Greenwoods classifications is completed.
