convictkid, this was my experience with the same problem.
I just returned an almost 3" kenyi to the LFS because I thought it was getting the male coloration and I already had one male and didn't want 2. I posted a pic of it in a post I made called, if i remember right, "another kenyi question". Turns out, going by that article, that females take on the male coloration when breeding or holding (I wasn't really sure which it ment). I don't think my fish was holding :? I hope not anyway. I might have got rid of a perfectly good female :x .
The fish I took back did start getting lighter and then started getting a little yellow on it. When I bought it I also bought what I found out was male because it was yellow with brown stripes. Both fish were only a little over an inch long when I got them & the male was aalready male color. I thought it was odd that the one I took back waited until it was almost 3" to start turning male color but chalked it up to being a subdominate male.
