I have 4 kenyi all about an inch maybe a little more. My question is how long before I know if there is a male present, one is a little larger then then others and the dark bars on its side is very light compared to the others. Could this be a male starting to change. I dont see egg spots on any yet, do they not develop till later.

Thanks for the link herny. I had read the profile here before on them but didn't know until now that there was also a species article you could click on  .

convictkid, this was my experience with the same problem.

I just returned an almost 3" kenyi to the LFS because I thought it was getting the male coloration and I already had one male and didn't want 2. I posted a pic of it in a post I made called, if i remember right, "another kenyi question". Turns out, going by that article, that females take on the male coloration when breeding or holding (I wasn't really sure which it ment). I don't think my fish was holding :? I hope not anyway. I might have got rid of a perfectly good female :x .

The fish I took back did start getting lighter and then started getting a little yellow on it. When I bought it I also bought what I found out was male because it was yellow with brown stripes. Both fish were only a little over an inch long when I got them & the male was aalready male color. I thought it was odd that the one I took back waited until it was almost 3" to start turning male color but chalked it up to being a subdominate male.
