Hi all im pretty confused at the moment my filter sponges and pillow stuffing keep turning red in my 55 gallon african tank. the pillow stuffing is a sort of pinky colour its the sponge thats fairly dark. it is fairly old and has been reused a fair few times. :roll:
i would love to know what is causing this. :x

Could be bacterial growth. I remember in my Microbiology class certain strains of bacteria produced a red/pink pigment when they colonized a plate. Happens to old yogurt in the fridge as well =p.

Could be the food you're feeding too. I use NLS and it leave a pinkish red tint.

about the only way you would notice any blood in the tank is if you slaughtered a cow above it. One or two fish simply dont have enough blood to be noticed in a 55gal, or even on a filter.

Likely either food, red tinged poop, or bacterial growth.

i give em Tetra Color formerly know as color bits. they are red and my fry eat a few every now and then. and their poopies are red so I guess thats why my filters gone that color. thanks guys. :thumb:
