what can I use to cushion it? Anything? I was thinking maybe the kind of foam that you put on top of a mattress, but I don't know if that's toxic or breaks down. Maybe a large filter sponge cut in half (or more), since they absorb enough water to not be *too* buoyant?

I actually did this recently, don't think I took any pictures, I bought some egg crate, spray painted it black and just put it behind the rocks, had to cut some notches here and there for the filters.

My current SA planted aquarium has a sponge attached to the the rear panel with sealant.

As long as you allow the sealant to dry fully, the sponge will not lift when you add water.

Also this makes for a fantastic bio-filter..... :thumb:

When you say eggrate, do you mean foam, or the diffuser that I will use under the rocks?
