My Malanochromis Chipokae (mbuna). Just set up my first cichlid tank after living in the reef tank world for years and it's been a freaking nightmare. I've been having fish die randomly over the last couple of weeks. the latest went from healthy to swimming with the fishes in 24 hours. My wife noticed white discoloration on the sides yesterday. At first I thought was ick but it didn't spread and killed it FAST. I've never seen such discoloration.

Test show water parameters are all good. No free chlorine, alk, hardness all good. Ph is rock steady at 7.8, minimal nitrites, nitrates and ammonia. I'm religious about 20% water changes every week.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Welcome to Cichlid-forum! Sorry the circumstances are not better.

Columnaris has large white patches on the sides, but the pic looks a little different to me. Try Googling it and see if it looks like your fish.

Your ammonia and nitrite should be zero.

Chipokae is perhaps the most aggressive mbuna...difficult to keep even in a 72" tank.

Think in terms of 50% weekly partial water changes as a minimum.

What are the dimensions of your tank? What is your stock list?

Higher water changes is one thing different about reef setups vs keeping africans. I like to do = or > 75% weekly WC myself.
