Having learned the hard way I now have a 10g QT.
So how long should fish be kept there before I can put i n display tank?
What should I look for while in QT, eating, distress, what else?

I have learned the importance of using a QT tank the hard was also. I usually do two weeks in QT. Look for good colouring. make sure they are active and eating. watch out for any spots like ich or fungus. Make sure there is no redness around the gills. And if they look good after two weeks i usually feel safe enough to put them in my main tank.

If the value of the fish already in the tank is very high (monetary or personal value) then you may want to wait up to 6 weeks. There are some illnesses that seem to take up to four weeks to begin to show symptoms (one trigger for bloat seems to be 4 weeks).
If the fish are replaceable, then my usual is 2 to 3 weeks. I aim for three, and usually run out of patience at 2. :)

I treat any new fish with jpc tablets and keep them in qt for about 3 weeks. I don't take any chances anymore so thats why I do the treatments everytime. Just a little insurance for the minor cost of some meds.
