Not rare at all. They're frequently exported but as with all lesser known cichlids, they're availability depends on your location. Ohio can be a hotbed for cichlid trade, so you have an advantage there.

I looked through the reviews at the more popular dealers and none were currently selling the fish, so I wasnt sure how common it was. I will try to check around my local clubs to see if anyone has any.
It is in reality a pretty uncommon, approaching rare fish in the hobby. That doesn't mean it is impossible to obtain, but it isn't something you would ever see at the LFS. From that perspective, yes it is rare.
They are a very nice fish, that you'll just have to be patient and check the online dealers. If one imports wild fish, you might want to contact them, and place an order for them to order you in some.
