Mbuna keepers, how many hours per day do you leave your lights on? On a related note, is it okay to feed them while the lights are off? Will they still be able to find the food if the tank is only dimly lit with ambient light?

I don't have plants so I rarely use the lights on the show tanks which are in a room with 2 big windows. I don't even use the room lights.

They eat for 30 seconds so that is all the time they need to see, if you have a very dark room. Also I think they smell it but that is not a scientific observation.

For a basement maternity tank I keep the room light on for 14 hours/day.

For a planted tank 6-8 hours daily works.
