If I keep appropriate numbers of females to males are these guys really that likely to hybridize? Frankly I don't see why the Hongi is even in the Lab genus when side by side they have clearly different body shapes. Combine that with the drastic color differences and I think I'd be safe to house both in a 75g. Can anyone provide some anecdotal experience?

Probably will be no problem, go ahead, but always a possibility. With any Malawis, always a possibility. The Hongi should color up fine.

If you are not saving fry, you shouldn't even worry about it. Hybrid fry should be easy to tell.
