Just tried a teaspoon of Baking Soda + teaspoon of Instant Ocean + Tablespoon of Epson Salt per a 5 gallon water change in a 50 gallon tank of 18 young Protomelas steveni. They seemed to enjoy it.
Curious to see if anyone else is doing this rather that buying the premix buffers, and effects versus the premix.

regards,

I use a homemade buffer as well. I started with the standard recipe from the Library Section, then tweaked it a bit for my tap water parameters. My water is harder than what they are starting with in the recipe article, so I was able to use less epsom salt.

What was your starting pH, KH, GH and what did you get?
Since I only changed 10 percent, the adjustment would be marginal. After a few more water changes I will take the readings to compare. :D
My water here in N. Ga. is soft and PH drops rapidly.
My discus and angelfish like the lower ph and soft water, but the rift lake fish need the buffering.
