[The information furnished herein is based on the Loiselle revision of the genus (1979). Classificatory changes may be made pending a systematic revision of the genus currently in prep.] The Congo form of Hemichromis stellifer exhibits an orangish-beige base coloration, while the entire ventral region of the fish is rosey-red. The Gabon form, however, is more uniformly red dorsally and ventrally, especially when breeding or dominant. H. stellifer can be distinguished from the other species of the genus by exhibiting an iridescent turquoise edge or dot its body scales. â€"Randall Kohn
