Every image of Hemichromis cerasogaster in the aquarium literature with which this writer is aware actually depicts H. stellifer, another member of the Hemichromis guttatus species-group, which was first proposed by Dr. Paul Loiselle in his 1979 revision of the genus. In fact, no one knew exactly what H. cerasogaster looked like until living specimens were collected by Dr. Ulrich Schliewen in August-September 2002 and imported into the U.S. by Tony Orso in the fall of the same year and offered as H. sp. "Inongo."

The principal character which distinguishes H. cerasogaster from congeners is its buccal dentition (kind, number, and arrangement of jaw teeth): In addition to an outer row of jaw teeth, H. cerasogaster possesses up to four inner rows (vs. no inner rows or, in rare cases, one to one-and-half inner rows in congeners). To hobbyists, however, H. cerasogaster can be easily distinguished from congeners by its distinctive color pattern: H. cerasogaster is the only scientifically-described jewelfish that exhibits no dark blotches on the body nor on the caudal peduncle but does, however, exhibit a discrete dark, rectangular blotch on the spiny part of the dorsal fin. â€"Randall Kohn
