I just switched out my 55 gallon to sponge filters (Hydro Sponge H-III). There are two of them in the tank, one on each side and they are powered by air. Currently, the heater is placed in the center of back glass, mounted horizontally about 3" from the bottom of the tank.

I've got a Coralife digital thermometer stuck in the top left of the tank and it's current reading is 79.5*F. There's also a Marineland stick on thermometer strip on the lower right of the tank which is reading ~84*F. Either something is askew with one or both thermometers (I know neither of them are of very good quality) or my heater isn't placed very well.

Is there somewhere else I should be putting the heater to get the tank heated evenly?

i would first put the coralife thermometer by the stick on strip and see how accurate the strip really is. circulation is gonna be key in making sure there arent any dead spots.
