Gnathochromis permaxillaris is an unusual looking fish from Lake Tanganyika. Its most distinctive feature is the shape of its mouth. Living over the muddy lake bottom, the mouth acts like a vacuum cleaner to carefully lifts detritus and other organisms off the surface. While not very popular in the hobby, its feeding technique is interesting to watch. The video below shows how G. permaxillaris extends its mouth to feed off of the substrate. This species should not be kept with aggressive fish and should be provided a some type of cave for cover. To discuss Gnathochromis permaxillaris, visit the Lake Tanganyika forum.
