This is a very elongate mbuna found along the northwestern and possibly northeastern shores of Lake Malawi. Most specimens in the hobby have been captured from Nkhata Bay.

It dwells at a depth of 10 - 25 meters. It feeds on small invertebrates and crustaceans living in the sand. It captures these by scooping up silt and then filtering it through its gills. It's also possible that it feeds by scooping loose aufwuchs off of rocks.
