I stripped one of my yellow labs a day ago and had 14 fry, woke up this morning and 5 were dead, and others seem to be struggling.
Is it common to lose fry at the very early stages..?
Checked water parameters and temp and all is fine, did a quick 20 percent water change.

What I don't understand is that I have done nothing different from my last batches of labs and jalos,
Had a total of 26 and they have all survived and are now about an inch.

No it is not normal for mbuna fry like yellow labs. Some Tanganyikans are more sensitive...i.e. calvus fry would be a different answer.

Could your water authority be doing increased chemicals for a spring cleaning?

When you have sensitive fry it can work if you do the big water changes on the main tank, and do many small water changes on the fry tank with water from the main tank only.
