I just got a FREE 29g. tank, stand, & Fluval 304 filter off of freecycle.com and I don't know anything about canister filters.

What I'm wondering is... I also have a 55g. tank with 2 HOB filters on it. I'm not even sure what they are but each one takes 2 filter cartridge pads with the intake in the middle of them. One of them has 2 bio wheels and the other has plastic baskets that I put polyester fiber fill in.

My question is do you think I should use the canister and one HOB filter on the 55g. so the canister can be hid in the stand of the 55g. and use the other HOB on the 29g.? Or leave it as is and just use the canister on the 29g. tank it came with?

Thanks

I think whatever you want to do you'd be okay. THe 304 is rated for tanks up to 75gal, so it will be okay on the 29gal or the 55gal. I have a 304 running on my 55gal, an personally run multiple filters on every tank I have.

I'd say you'd be okay running the 304 and one HOB on the 55 and moving the other HOB to the 29, just my opinion though.

Thanks Awugod.
That's what I was hoping to hear. I guess I'll find out eventually if the one HOB isn't enough for the 29g. and if not can add another. Same goes for the 55g.

How would I know if it wasn't adequate? Maybe while I have the HOB's off I can see what models they are and what the ratings are on them.

Finding out the model #'s is a good start, this way you will know what size tank they are rated for and how many gallons per hour they filter.

Well, if the HOB filter isn't big enough for the 29gal the water may not looks so clean, and worse case scenario, some fish may die is the tank is overstocked.

You can always pick up a small internal filter for the 29gal in addition to the HOB, shouldnt cost for than $20 or $30.

If you run the 304 on the 55gal in addition to one of the HOB's you should not ahve any problems as the 304 is actually rated for tanks up to 75gal. That in combo with the HOB adding additional filtration you should be okay. HOB's are also good for surface agitation increasing oxygen levels which is good for you fish.

Hope this helps.
