so i picked up a juvenile flowerhorn online and of course i knew the risks of getting a female but this guy looks super colorful and is maybe only 2.5 inches long. Might be too early to tell but "he" fights his own reflection a lot and shows lots of aggression in the tank alone by himself. any thoughts??? hope i got a gem!!

Just looks like a young Flowerhorn Cichlid to me. Male? Female? Who knows?!! Even the females of these things get some pretty nice, flowing fins and will grow 'Nuchal Humps' on their heads (though admittedly not as large as the males are).
Just have to wait and see, and its all part of the adventure I guess with having a juvenile Flowerhorn!
And besides, those 'Wet Pets' have a tendency to really grow on their owners keeping them. By the time you know if its a male or female - you may not actually care.
