Hello everyone, I'm in need of a little assistance with my fishless cycling. I've searched and searched and have found no answers. I am using Tim Craig's article on fishless cycling as my main guide while trying to use google to find answers for the questions I have. I seem to be stuck on this question though.

Today is full day number 11 and I have not seen my ammonia drop at all. It is just stuck at 4ppm. I am however getting nitrite and nitrate readings. I only added ammonia once because the first dose I did was way to high so I did a water change to bring the level where it should be.

Here is all the relevant information I can think of.

Ammonia 4.0ppm
Nitrite roughly 3-4ppm. (Test is Darker than 2.0 but lighter than 5.0)
Nitrate is 20ppm
PH 8.2
Temp is 85 degrees

75 gallon tank
FX4 and AC 110 HOB filter both using the media that came with them
Using seachems Stability
I used API Stress coat plus to make the tap water safe.
Using API master test kit and strips.

I tested my tap water and both ammonia and nitrite read zero.
Everywhere I seem to read says my ammonia should be zero before I see nitrite but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I'm not exactly sure where I am in the cycling process?
What should I do now?
Am I close to being able to order my fish?

Thank you in advance.

How were the numbers when you first started, after the ammonia dose? Was nitrite at 0? You may be just still trying to get rid of the high dose of ammonia you put in.

Nitrite was 0 at the start. During that first initial dose my ammonia was around 8ppm. I did a roughly 40-50% water change the following day because to my understanding anything over 5ppm can cause a delay in the cycle. After the water change my ammonia was 1ppm so I dosed up to 4ppm and that's where I am still today. Everything else was still 0.

Ammonia 1ppm
Nitrite 3ppm
Nitrate 30ppm

Things are happening as expected right? You are getting nitrite and ammonia and nitrite are not zero. Still not six weeks so there is no expectation that the cycle should be complete by now. My nitrite went way higher than 3ppm before it started dropping.

How did your fishless cycling work out?

Did you end up putting all fish at once? 15 plus fish? Hope all is well.
A lot has changed since this post a couple months ago. The cycle did work fantastic. I ended up dropping 22 fish in at once with no issues or spikes whatsoever ever. About 3 weeks ago I upgraded to a 120 gallon. Have roughly 40-45 fish in there all doing great.
