I'm considering getting a new tank custom built. The measurements I've come up with are 160 cm by 35 cm and 30 cm tall (that's 5'3" by 14" and 12" tall for you US people), that'll give me a very nice lenght without the tank being too massive. Total volume will be around 168 litres/45 gallons US.

So what'd you put in a tank that long? It should be possible to see a lot of interesting behavior not normally seen in a 45 gal tank.

Ideas I've come up with are

Saulosi species tank
2 convict pairs with dithers
Tanganiyka community

but I'd love to get more ideas and input, the tank might be a while off still, but I really like the idea.

I think a Tanganyika community would give you very interesting behavior, and you'd be able to split it up pretty effectively considering the short dimension front to back. I say do that, a multi colony, some smaller julies, and maybe another shelly colony at the other end.
