We would like to have Mbuna cichlids, if possible for color, but that is flexible and will consider other cichlids

Can I please ask what would be a good choice for a 40 gallon tank?

Also, besides having all males or all females, is there another way to stop breeeding? Will different species breed?

Thank you if you can help :)

Hi Jennifer and Welcome to C-F!!

What are the dimensions of your 40G tank?

Yes different species can breed with each other which is why it is important to choose tank mates wisely.

There is no easy way to stop breeding once they start but the upside is if you choose a species that does breed, you may be able to get some money for the offspring that can be sold at local club events or maybe even for product exchange at your local fish store!

I have lfs's and neither will offer credit or money for offspring. I hear a lot of you guys getting that but not me.

If the tank is 30" long, I would skip the mbuna and look into Tanganyikans.

Are you sure about the measurement? 40G tanks are often 36".
