I bought a young firemouth and I'm not real familiar with Central American cichlids. Do central ameicans color up was they get bigger?

My fish is really young and has bland color. If I feed good quality foods will it color up?

Fish get stressed with moves and water differences. Good food is always a plus ! Let the fish settle it will color up.

Aye, let him settle in. Good food and water changes and he'll be a red menace in no time. Every firemouth I've ever owned has been a troublemaker :)

I had the same problem. Two firemouths about 2.25in long never got the dark grey color or dark red belly. Their fins and behavior seem very healthy. I assume I simply received poorly bred fish.

My old 3.5" FM (don't have him anymore) with dark gravel (37 gallon)

same fish with PFS substrate (90 gallon)

So they can also change color based on the substrate, but give them time to reach maturity
