Check the trading post here, craigslist, aquabid, or local club auctions. There are many a good deal to be had using those avenues.

You're not too far from NYC, right? Maybe drive in or take a train in to Queens or Brooklyn? I was in NY on business last fall and found a couple of good stores in Manhattan, and I've got to believe there are more. Fish should be O.K. in bags a couple of hours. Maybe take a cooler & put the bagged fish ln the cooler when you get them? Tell the LFS the length of the trip so they'll pack accordingly.
I believe there is an active fish club on Long Island, see if it is in the Links menu at the top of the Cichlif-forum page. Scroll down and search NY for clubs.

I have bought fish and tanks from fishkeepers near you, so if you join the club and attend meetings you will find fish.
do you happen to remember the names of any stores in nc bc i would happily take the train to fins some nice fish for once i cant find saulosi or afra anywhere
