I was thinking about going with the Marineland c160. It is rated to 30 gallons. I know you are supposed to buy filtration that exceeds your aquariums dimensions...but will this filter be effective? I have no experience with canister filters...all of my filters have been HOB. I have decided to go with canister filter so I can have an inline heater.

In my opinion I would suggest to get a little larger canister filter if thats the way you want to go. A C160 is rated for a 30 Gal and pumps 160 gpm. That would be a turnover rate of 5.3 You would like a turnover rate of 10x. which would give you better filtration. Another inexpensive filter would be a Rena xp2 which has a flow rate of 300 gph giving you the 10x turnover rate.
Petsmart carries the Rena models and if you print the online price the store will honor the price. I saved myself hundreds $$$$$ on aquarium supplies. :thumb:
