I have a 55 gallon tank with a bio wheel filter. Well because of the sand the filter doesn't have much life left any suggestion or recommendations on a good filter or filtration setup. Oh and I have one sponge filter running with it as well as three one inch plecos.

A popular combo is a HOB and a Canister. Aqua Clears, Emperors, Penguins all seem to be pretty decent HOBs. Fluval, Eheim, Marinland etc seem to be good as well.

I run a Fluval 405 and Eheim 2075 Pro 3 on my tank it works great. Dont like the noise or looks of the HOBs and got a good deal on these.

As far as the sand what I did was get some prefilter sponge for the Aqua Clear 70 and that was enough to cut it in half, and bore a hole in them 3/4 of the way through to slip over the intakes to prevent sand from getting picked up by filter. Just rinse them out in a bucket of tank water with each WC and your good to go.
