Hey everyone.
I just got 2 canister filters awhile back. They are in excellent condition and cost me nothing. They are probably overkill for my set ups but I'd like to set them up anyways.
The first is a fluval 304. What are the most common set ups for these filters? What do you put in the top drawer, middle drawer and bottom drawer?
The other filter is an eheim 2227. What is the most common media to use in these?
Also are they good as mechanical filters and bio?
I am not sure which filter will go for what tank just yet.

My currently running tanks are a 50 gallon tank with 8 demasonis and 4 yellow labs.
My other tank is a 35 gallon with just a pair of convicts.

i use pillow stuffing for mechanical, and ceramic rings for bio.

There are a few cheaper choices for the bio filtration, but that is what I use.

I have a fluval 305. I run bio media in the bottom and middle tray and filter floss (pillow stuffing) in the top tray. Those filters have plenty of mechanical and bio filtration. I'd run the 304 in the smaller tank and the 2227 in the larger one.

The 2227 filter is designed to be used as a wet/dry type filter. Eheim doesn't recommend using any mechanical media, such as floss or pads, as it MAY interfere with the proper operation of the float assembly. You can get the owners' manual online at Eheims' website.

I own the 2229 model and use it as a second filter on a 75G tank. It's not a cheap filter to buy new, so I'd say you got a good filter to use as secondary filtration.

For the fluval 304, I wouldn't need to use carbon? Would the bio media cover what the carbon would do?

As for the eheim 2227, should I be running my aquaclear 70 with it to cover the mechanical?

I would use the AC 70 in combination with the 2227. You may have to clean the AC 70 more often being the only major mechanical media filter on the tank. The 2227 will perform some breakdown of solids. It is just not designed to be used with pads or floss in regular use.

There is a very small section in the owners manual that explains how to use the 2227 for short term mechanical or chemical filtration. It involves removing some of the bio media and replacing it with floss, pads or carbon AND you have to plug the end of the breather pipe so this procedure eliminates the intermittent filling and draining that makes this filter a wet/dry style.

Hope this helps.
