How high can you fill a tank in relation to the black plastic strip on top?

I fill mine basically to the bottom of the plastic trim.

I think I read some where that it is best to fill as full as possible, but you should never have the water touching the lid as if will stop the gas exchange at the surface, depends on the lid you have to, dont want your fish doing the high dive

Right up to the trim or a wee bit over it to hide the water line is good.
