I have 4 Electric Yellows who are doing well in the 240 gallon community tank. I find out that it looks like three of them are females. One the the females is heavily loaded with fry in her mouth and the male is very protective of her but she has no place to let the fry out. I am thinking of removing the female bearing fry and the male into a 10 gallon hospital (neonatal LOL) tank and let them care for their fry. I am thinking the male will not eat them...i know the female doesn't. Is this s good way to go?

They will both eat the fry, and a 10G is not large enough for adult labs.

I had an Electric Yellow years ago that gathered up her fry in her mouth if there was danger. So I didn't know they ate them because she would spit them back out when the coast was clear. What is keeping mouthbrooders from eating fry before they even get out of the female's mouth?
I didn't mean to keep her there long but also wanted to save the fry.

They will gather them for a day or two, but after that the fry will disappear one by one.

The male will eat them all as soon as spit...he may be hovering near her waiting for her to spit.

Put just the female in the 10G if she has been holding 18 days. You could also strip her.

As always thank you DJ. I will put her into the 10 gallon and let her release them on her own. I read the article on striping the eggs in the library. Good article! I am going to let her do this herself which is another option for various reasons.

Hopefully she will only be in there a day or two. You will need a 20G Long tank to raise the fry.

Exactly. That is why most of us let the mom's spit in the tank. 20 fry every six weeks from every female is too many.

I agree. Will do it a few times for the fun of it but no way can keep up with all that. I hate to say it cause I love animals etc but at least they would be a healthy snack.

The Electric Yellow female is in the 10 gallon tank her second day. She is still holding on the the babies except for two I can see in the medium that I put in there. I gave her some small sinking pellets to see if she will let go of the babies and eat. She has not eaten that I could see but it looks like she is having small straight pieces of dark poop. I don't quite get the poop and she still has her mouth full.
