With my filtration system the surface of my tank is constantly moving so I was wondering if I really need an air stone? Isn't their purpose to move the water? An if mine is constantly moving I shouldn't need it right?

Correct. If the water is being moved so that it does not become "layered" and water is constantly moving at the top, the O2 exchange is okay. Just don't let it get a slick on the top that might stop gas exchange. Oil from food can build up but that is true, airstone or not. Just keep it moving.

Well that's never a problem with the oil since I change the water 2x a week but thanks I'm going to take the airstone out when I get home
