Sunfish. They are a distant cousin of the cichlid. They also make nests and rear their fry.

So my question is. Why arn't we We breeding these fishies and sending them over to Asia lol. I've seen it on this forum many times. We see people catching cichlids out of there backyard. and we get envious. Cause they have what we want. but to them they are common as a sunfish to us. to me that is irony. We have a amazing fish in our backyards that could make a interesting addiction to our cichlid tanks :)

sunfish number some 32 species, many of which have several subspecies. A few, like the blackbanded sunfish (Enneacanthus chaetodon), longear (Lepomis megalotis) and orangespotted sunfish (Lepomis humilis), Look pretty amazing..

Look at how purdy it is.

Talk with some people over seas, they do keep "our fish" and they do have the same invasive species problems just like we do...

The rearing process of a bluegill is amazing to watch from shore. The males protect the circular pits with their lives and they all spawn at the same time in the shallows... Instead of making the pits with their mouths like cichlids do they simply swim in circles carving out the substrate with their wake. Fun to watch if you're a fish geek like me. LOL
