I have had african cichlids for years now. However, i want to set up a 100g show tank for discus. They are so beautiful. Here's my question are you suppose to leave the bottom of the tank bare? Just wanted to know. Over the next several weeks I am selling my africans to make room for discuss. Any comments or links to readings would be greatly appreciated.

leaving the tank bottom bare is good for tank hygiene which is good for the growth of the discus, but its not essential. What type of discus are you thinking of buying? I've kept a few types, wild heckels and domestic. Before you buy any see if you can source some nice wild blue discus, these guys are the easiest of wilds to breen and are great parents and strong fish (as long as you get healthy specimens) There is a myth that it is harder to keep wild discus over the domestic, the wilds are hardier in the long run no doubt.
