I currently have two reg dempseys in a 55 gal but have them seperated by plastic egg crate because male was keeping the female up in corner. They are the only fish in the tank and I'm wondering if it is possible for them to spawn through the egg crate. Has anyone heard of or experienced this situation and have success raising the fry?

I don't use egg crate but yes I have heard of fish spawning through a divider.

Thanks for your reponses, its good to know that there is a possibility. I have a pvc elbow facing the male side of egg crate and the female spends quite a bit of time in there, as she doesn't have to worry about being chased or beat up. I"ll keep you updated with any progress.

A lot of people use this method with larger CA cichlids. It's the safe way to get fry from parents who typically like to kill each other.
