Morning all - I have a 55g Mbuna tank with 22 adults and 3 small fry, running 2 x AquaClear 110's and a Penguin Bio-Wheel 200.

I was wondering about mixing in different kinds of filtration media in the AC110's. I use their foam and I add my own carbon in a cheese cloth bag. I don't like AC's bio-filter media so I don't use it. I have left over space in the filter container and have been thinking about using some sort of water polishing filter in there or some other sort of filtration media just to more efficiently utilize the filtration space I have.

Have you guys and gals ever mixed and matched filter media? Results? Pros / cons? Do's / don'ts? You get the idea. Now spill your guts and give me the scoop.

Take out the carbon (useless unless you have chemicals in the water), use the bio-media, and get some filter floss, pillow stuffing works very well and is cheap too, $3 at walmart

You can use whatever you want in there, it depends on what you want to accomplish with your filter, do you need more mechanical filtration? I've got an AC50 on one of my 10g tanks with a single sponge in it and the rest of the media basket empty, the aquarium is heavily planted and I feel like all I need from the filter is circulation and mechanical filtration, a single sponge does an adequate job so that's all I use.
