Combing filter media?

Morning all - I have a 55g Mbuna tank with 22 adults and 3 small fry, running 2 x AquaClear 110's and a Penguin Bio-Wheel 200.

I was wondering about mixing in different kinds of filtration media in the AC110's. I use their foam and I add my own carbon in a cheese cloth bag. I don't like AC's bio-filter media so I don't use it. I have left over space in the filter container and have been thinking about using some sort of water polishing filter in there or some other sort of filtration media just to more efficiently utilize the filtration space I have.

Have you guys and gals ever mixed and matched filter media? Results? Pros / cons? Do's / don'ts? You get the idea. Now spill your guts and give me the scoop

if i was you i would leave the sponge and put some filter floss on top of the sponge. this will help polish the water and act as more mechanical filtration.

i would then remove the carbon, which really does nothing unless you are removing medication, and put in some sort of bio filtration. i use the bio media that comes with ac's, but if you dont like it add what you like.

i do what i put above and it has worked very well for me so far. make sure to rinse the sponge once in a while in tank water and i replace the filter floss every week or two. alot of people do alot of different things so im sure you will get some other good ideas.
