I have a DIY bucket sump with a mag drive pump which has a prefilter on it. I clean both the prefilter of the bucket and the pump monthly.

Just did the first cleaning in over a year. Used a W/D vac to get rid of the sludge and water in the sump.

I vacuum the bottom of mine with every water change. Overall though my sump stays very clean as I do my water polishing right there. I have a 3000gph pump feeding a dual 25 micron canister (similiar to Ocean Clear) that is plumbed out of the sump and back into the sump. The water in there looks like cake batter in a blender due to the high turnover. Keeps the tank nice and sparkly clean.

tannable and i guess that you never touch the bioballs or scrubbies etc?? i know it sounds like an obvious question but sorry.
I look at them once a quarter or so and only take action of they are clogged up with gunk such that water flow would be impeded. If they do need cleaned I only clean about half of em.
