Anybody every use red brick (regular brick) or cinder blocks in their African cichlid tanks?

I have patiently chiseled away at these slate/quarts sheets to get the perfect shapes to fit my tank however i have yet to find a "perfect" base to elevate my slabs and wanted to use brick or cinder blocks as spacers to build up my rock shelfs.
Has anyone ever used brick or cinder blocks? Does anyone know how safe it would be?
Thoughts?

I'd skip the concrete blocks due to the lime content. Not sure about the brick.

You may not get a natural look with bricks/shelves. Try jumbling up natural rocks. The fish like tight spaces anyway...shelves that are so far apart may not give them the security they seek.

If you are not seeking a natural look, think about new/clean terra cotta pots and saucers.

Agreed about the concrete blocks. Im gonna pick up a few bricks today. The first/bottom layer absolutely needs to be as level as possible.
