Have had my 4ft tank established for about 6 months now and i have 2 frontosas and about 12 mixes of cichlids peacocks, electric yellow etc.
All my levels are correct ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate bout 40

Heavy breathing can be linked to several things. Stress from over crowding and/or bullying. Negative reaction to iffy water quality. Lack of oxygen in the water. Water too warm.Could be bacterial gill infection. Right off I suggest you address high nitrate. 40 is way too high. Strive to keep under 20, even closer to 10. Increase water change volume and frequency from what you have been doing.
