Thanks for this! I've been debating moving from gravel to sand as well. I have a 90 Gallon with about 30 mixed African Cichlids. They are having babies like crazy, but that's another story!

I have 2 Fluval U4 filters, do you think that would be enough filtration? If I go towards shifting to sand, what's the process for doing that? Do I need to remove all the fish from the tank? How long do you think that the whole process takes?

Thanks in advance!

Shoot for 8X to 10X GPH across all your equipment. GPH=gallons per hour.

I like to remove the rocks/fish to expedite, but some members find removing the fish more work. Two hours if you have everything ready before you start? Depends on how quick you and remove/replace the rocks and net the fish. Use a clean dust pan to remove the old substrate in big scoops. Thoroughly vacuum the old substrate before you start and be sure your fish are used to water with 10ppm nitrates or less first as well.
