This little guy was abandoned in a rental property and I'm about to adopt him. I only have experience with smaller tropicals (tetras, etc) and honestly I'm not even sure this is a cichlid but I was hoping someone could help me a) identify the species and b) tell me if this species can co-exist with tetras.

Convict cichlid.
Generally too aggressive to be housed with most tetras. Some may have had success housing them with Buenos Aires tetras in at least a 3 ft. tank. Giant danios another smaller fish that has decent chance of working out. Any small fish will have to be very tough and hardy to be housed with a convict.
