i just took a 55g from my father. as I was removing the gravel i noticed tons of charcoal mixed in. he said the "charcoal got away from me one day". Is this a big problem? Theres alot of it. thanks for the help

Well didn't you say you are removing it so what's the problem?

over time, the charcoal breaks down and fuels algae. If this is not a concern, then the charcoal isn't worth worry over.

There are other "theoretical" problems that could happen if every condition was 'just so' but those aren't worth mentioning here.

Of the things to worry about, that is a smaller one. If it is mixed in too well to pick out, I would ignore it. It may over time do something for algae but there are so many other things that will help the algae that I would not worry too much about this one. Plants might like this tank better than without. Any chance of plants in the future?
